Stanford Picks Up Five Spots For Finals During NCAA Championships Prelims Friday

West Lafayette, Ind. - Stanford earned five spots in the finals during prelim action Friday on the second day of the short-course yards 2005 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center on the campus of Purdue University. Caroline Bruce was Stanford's top individual qualifier with a third-place finish in the prelims of the 100 breast (1:00.69), while Dana Kirk also squeaked into the championship finals in the 100 fly by taking eighth. Stanford got another strong relay performance with a third-place effort from its 200 medley squad, while the Cardinal is seeded eighth in the 800 free relay that will be swum in its entirety with Friday night's finals (7:00 pm, ET/4:00 pm, PT). Stanford will start the finals session in fourth-place after scoring 108 points on the first day of competition Thursday.

Kristen Caverly (9th, 4:15.61) and Laura Davis (13th, 4:16.47) also qualified for the consolation finals in the 400 IM during Friday's prelims. Caverly had been seeded fourth with a qualifying time of 4:10.83, while Davis moved up ten spots from her No. 23 seeding.

Divers Cassidy Krug and Ashlee Rosenthal began 3-meter diving prelim competition at 1:15 pm, ET/10:15 am, PT.

Kirk dropped four spots from her fourth seed in her eighth-place 100 fly finish but managed to reach the championship finals for the third straight year by completing the course in 53.38, which was .05 seconds ahead of ninth-place Sarah Wanezek of Texas. Kirk was just .06 seconds behind fifth-place Katie Yevak of Georgia.

Stanford moved up four spots from its seventh seed for its third-place finish in the 200 medley relay as a team of Amy Wagner, Bruce, Kirk and Brooke Bishop clocked a time of 1:39.74.

Elizabeth Durot (21st, 1:47.73), Lacey Boutwell (27th, 1:48.68) and Desiree Stahley (38th, 1:49.73) competed for the Cardinal in the 200 free prelims.

Bishop (22nd, 54.87) was the top finisher for the Cardinal in the 100 back prelims, while Wagner (43rd, 56.29) and Sarah Jones (46th, 57.00) also participated in the event for Stanford.

Lauren Costella's season-best time of 4:21.80 in the 400 IM earned her 30th-place, which was 13 spots better than her No. 43 seeding.

Erica Liu was 41st in the prelims of the 100 breast (1:04.34).

Three swimmers from Georgia, who posted a commanding lead in the team scoring competition on Thursday, were the top individual qualifiers in Friday's prelims. Mary Descenza (100 fly, 52.16), Kara Lynn Joyce (200 free, 1:45.95) and Lindsey Ertter (100 breast, 59.80) pulled off the hat trick for the Bulldogs. Auburn's Kirsty Coventry (400 IM, 4:09.69) and Arizona's Marshi Smith (100 back, 52.88) won the other two prelims in individual races on Friday.

Arizona won the 200 medley relay (1:38.75) prelims with a team of Smith, Erin Sieper, Whitney Myers and Jenna Gresdal.

The 800 free relay will be swum with Friday evening's finals.
