Bannister Throws Shutout In 10-0 Win Over Stony Brook

March 19, 2005

IRVINE, Calif. - Brett Bannister threw his first career complete game shutout Saturday as the No. 23 USC Trojans defeated the Stony Brook Seawolves, 10-0, in day two action at the 2005 OCYSF-UC Irvine Tournament from Anteater Ballpark. Bannister, whose previous longest stint has been 6 1/3 innings, allowed just three hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

USC (12-6) has now won five of its last six games as the Trojans used a seven-run seventh inning as part of their season-high, 19-hit attack. Billy Hart and Blake Sharpe had three hits each for the Trojans.

Bannister improved to 4-1 on the season. He gave up just three singles, did not allow a runner to advance past second base and retired 14 straight batters during one stretch.

SBU's Kris Bakey fell to 1-1 on the season after allowing six runs (three earned) in six innings. The Seawolves are now 5-7 overall.

With two outs in the top of the first, USC first baseman Lucas Duda hit a ground ball that handcuffed Stony Brook third baseman Chris DiBiaso's glove to score the first run for the Trojans. Sophomore Cyle Hankerd followed with an RBI double to left center. USC added another run in the fifth when Hart hit a bunt single down the third base line, advancing Sharpe to third. Hart tried to advance to second, but deked the SBU first baseman long enough to plate Sharpe for a 3-0 advantage.

The Trojans opened the seventh with three consecutive singles by right fielder Darin Vieira, Sharpe and catcher Jeff Clement. After Seawolves' reliever Tom Koehler entered the game, Hart hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Vieira. Duda followed with his first collegiate home run, hitting a three-run blast to center field. Designated hitter Baron Frost hit a two-run single, followed by Vieira's RBI single to cap the seven-run inning.

The tournament concludes tomorrow with USC playing host UC Irvine at 5 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on, along with Gametracker live stats. Sunday's game will also be televised locally by Cox Cable.
