Beavers Complete Baseball Sweep, 9-3

March 19, 2005

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Andy Jenkins homered and drove in four runs as Oregon State beat Sacramento State 9-3 in non-conference baseball Saturday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. Pitcher Jonah Nickerson scattered five hits over seven innings and struck out eight to earn the win for OSU (16-3 overall), which swept the three-game series and has won four straight.

The Beavers and Hornets (7-15-1) had been scheduled to play on Sunday, but shifted the schedule for the series to a doubleheader on Friday and a single game on Saturday to avoid the wet weather forecast for the weekend. OSU's next game is at Portland on Tuesday at 2 p.m., the Beavers return home for a three-game series against Dallas Baptist on Thursday at 4 p.m., Friday at 4 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m.

The series finale against Sacramento State started just over an hour late after some morning rains, but Jenkins got the Beavers started in a hurry with a three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning.

'The homer did get us going and set the tone for today, and beating them Friday set the tone, too,' Jenkins said. 'On rainy days like this, you've got to be focused - you've got to go all the time, no matter what, and I think we did a good job of that today rather than just waiting around and expecting not to play.'

Jenkins, the Pacific-10 batting leader entering this week's games, is now hitting .500 with three home runs and 12 runs batted in since Feb. 26. The senior first baseman/catcher is now batting .435.

'I'm seeing the ball real well right now and just coming up swinging the bat,' Jenkins said. His homer was his team-high third of the season, and it was the first of OSU's 11 homers this season to come with more than one man on base.

Sacramento State got back within 3-2 in the top of the second inning as an error plated one run and Josh Levin's groundout scored another. Jenkins got one run back for the Beavers in the bottom of the second with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-2.

OSU broke the game open in the sixth, scoring four times as the Hornets committed a pair of errors. Chris Campos lined a two-out, two-run double down the rightfield line in the inning and Mitch Canham followed with a run-scoring single up the middle, then eventually scored on one of the errors for an 8-2 lead.

Nickerson improved to 4-0 this season. In his seven innings, the sophomore righthander allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and one walk while striking out eight. In all three games against the Hornets, OSU's starting pitcher worked at least six innings.

'All year we've been getting the same performances out of Jonah and Dallas (Buck) and Anton (Maxwell), and now offensively we just need to take it upon ourselves to give them a little cushion,' Jenkins said. 'That's the emphasis on the club right now, getting better offensively and not making them keep putting up zeroes. I don't think we're there yet, but we're making strides.'

OSU added its final run in the bottom of the seventh inning when Ryan Gipson walked with one out and eventually scored on Jacoby Ellsbury's groundout. Ellsbury also had his 11th stolen base of the season; it was the 45th of his career, giving him sole possession of fourth place on the Beavers' list of all-time leaders.

After OSU freshman Eddie Kunz pitched a scoreless eightth, Sacramento State closed out the scoring with a run off OSU reliever Kevin Gunderson in the top of the ninth, as Brett Flowers led off with a double and scored when Gunderson induced Matt Wilson to hit into a double play.

Campos was 2-for-4 for the Beavers and Gipson and Darwin Barney both had a pair of stolen bases. For the Hornets, Brian Blauser, Flowers and Brian Conradi were all 2-for-4.

The win gave the Beavers their second series sweep of the season.

'Last year, there were a couple of Sunday games we lost and I think that's one of the steps we need to take this year to make a regional - to make sure we close off series,' Jenkins said.
