Cal Baseball Defeats Hawaii-Hilo, 11-4

HILO, HI - The University of California used timely hitting and home runs from sophomore left fielder Chris Errecart and junior designated hitter Allen Craig to power past The University of Hawaii at Hilo, 11-4, at Wong Stadium, Friday night in Hilo, HI. Cal improves to 14-8, while the Vulcans fall to 1-28.
Both the Golden Bears and Hawaii-Hilo slugged out 12 hits. Cal pitcher, senior right-hander Eric Dworkis, kept the Vulcans in check by allowing two earned runs over 8.0 innings with 11 hits, two walks and four strikeouts. Sophomore Brandon Morrow threw the ninth inning for the Bears with one hit and three strikeouts.
Junior right fielder Jeremy Burchett (3-for-3, double) and Errecart (3-for-5, double, home run) led the Bears with three hits apiece.
Chris Campbell led the Vulcans with three hits. The losing pitcher for Hawaii-Hilo was starter Vinnie Biggs (5.3 innings, eight hits, seven earned runs, two walks, three strikeouts).
Cal took an early 3-0 lead off a three-run homer by Chris Errecart in the first inning. After a leadoff triple by freshman first baseman Mike Van Winden and a Vulcan error, Errecart sent a pitch over the left field wall.
The Vulcans came back to tie it the third off a bases loaded walk to A.J. Satele. After Michael Higa and Sean Tamura reached base, Chris Campbell drove in Higa with a single up the middle. After David Chu loaded the bases with an infield single, Tamura raced home on a Johnny Dudoit single and Chu came home on a bases loaded walk to Satele to tie the game.
Momentum quickly shifted back to the Bears in the fourth when Craig hit a two-run home run to make it 5-3. After freshman second baseman Josh Satin doubled to center, Craig blasted a pitch over the left field fence.
Cal never looked back from there, adding three runs in the sixth, two in the eighth and one in the ninth.
The Vulcans scored their last run in the eighth off a Matthew Haasenritter single.
The Bears will next play Hawaii-Hilo in a doubleheader, Saturday, Mar. 19 at 2 p.m. at Wong Stadium.
