Dean Throws School Record Javelin at Tucson Track Meet

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Washington State's Jenna Dean threw a school record of 169-feet, 7 inches (51.70m) in the women's javelin during the first night's events at the 21st Annual Willie Williams Classic Track & Field Meet at the University of Arizona's Roy P. Drachman Stadium.
Dean, a junior from Glenwood, Wash., reached second place while teammate Rachel Bertholf, a senior from Colbert, Wash., placed third with a throw of 151-3 (46.10m). Both Cougar women threw NCAA Regional Qualifying marks in the opening meet of the outdoor season. Dean, who bettered her PR by 16-feet, 3 inches, moves ahead of former All-American Molly Monroe's throw of 161-4 in the WSU all-time records for the women's javelin. Monroe's mark also came in Tucson but in 2000. The Williams' 2005 winner was Air Force's Dana Pounds who threw 181-3 (55.25m). WSU's Cougar combined events athletes Julie Pickler (128-8/39.23m) and Diana Pickler (125-4/38.21m) reached PRs Friday night.
Sophomore John Cassleman (Pullman, Wash.) also reached as NCAA Regional Qualifying time with his fourth-place finish in the men's 400m hurdles in a PR time of 52.31.
Among the other notable performances for the Cougs Friday night were freshmen Meghan Leonard (Newberg, Ore.) and Collier Lawrence (Reno, Nev.) who provided a one-two finish in their women's 3,000m steeplechase debut. Leonard ran a time of 11:16.62 while Lawrence finished in 11:21.30. In the men's steeplechase, WSU sophomore Chris Concha (Reno, Nev.) took second place with a PR time of 9:38.21, followed by freshman Phil Hinrichs (Pullman) in third place with a time of 9:44.21 and Chris Williams (sophomore, Federal Way, Wash.) with a PR of 10:04.68 for sixth place.
In the 800m races, freshman Haley Paul (Phoenix, Ariz.) was the runner-up in the women's race with a time of 2:12.42 while redshirt junior Justin Ireland (Issaquah, Wash.) finished fourth in the men's race in a PR time of 1:53.09.
Katie Miller (junior, Vancouver, Wash.) was second in the women's long jump with a leap of 18-9 1/4 (5.72m). Ryan Thomas (junior, Olympia, Wash.) took fourth place in the men's high jump as the top four men cleared 6-6 3/4 (2.00m) but were separated by missed attempts.
Redshirt freshman Drew Ulrick (Spokane, Wash.) had a fifth-place finish in the men's shot put with a PR toss of 53-3 1/2 (16.24m). Freshman Jon Jeffreys (Spokane Valley, Wash.) opened his Cougar career with a javelin throw of 195-5 (59.57m) to take eighth place, edging teammate Darion Powell (Kirkland, Wash.) who reached a PR with an identical throw.
The Willie Williams Classic concludes Saturday afternoon, March 19, at Tucson.
