WSU Splits Doubleheader With Utah Valley State

PULLMAN, Wash. -- - The Washington State baseball team split a doubleheader with Utah Valley State Saturday, winning the first game 9-3 but falling 14-4 in the nightcap at Bailey-Brayton Field. The Cougars are now 2-1 in the four-game series.
Wayne Daman Jr. (4-0) earned the win in the first game, going six innings for the Cougars (14-10) allowing two runs, one earned, on seven hits. Freshman Matt Oye (0-1) took the loss in the second game allowing six runs, four earned, during 2.2 innings of work.
UVSC's (6-15) starting pitcher Jed Jensen took the loss in game one, working six innings, allowing nine runs on 14 hits. In the night cap, Brady Drake (2-2) threw a complete game for the Wolverines. He allowed four runs on eight hits while throwing a total of 131 pitches.
Leading the Cougars at the plate during the two games was Jay Miller and Jim Murphy. Miller went 4-for-7 for the day, scoring and driving home one run. The junior is now hitting .636 for the series against the Wolverines. Murphy hit a home run in each of the games, giving him his fourth and fifth long balls of the season. The Kirkland native is now boasting a .756 slugging percentage for the season, as well as leading freshmen with a .378 average.
In the opening game, the Cougars scored a run in the first inning on a single by Brady Everett. WSU added four more runs in the third using a two-run single by Everett, a bases loaded walk, and a single by Jeff Miller. The Cougars posted single runs in the fourth and fifth on a pair of home runs. Kaeo Rubin hit his long ball of the season in the fourth, while in the fifth Murphy hit his first home run of the day. In the sixth, hits by Jay Miller and Zach McAngus drove home the final two Cougar runs of the game.
UVSC posted its first run in the fourth when Canyon Vance scored on a sacrifice fly by Trent Perry. Another Wolverine run was added in the fifth with a single by Nick Connor to score Jeremy Harris. The final UVSC run came on a solo home run by Reno Mendenhall in the ninth.
The Wolverines scored early and often during the nightcap. Leading UVSC offensively was Dan Bulow who hit two solo home runs in the game, the first shot in the third and the second long ball in the seventh.
UVSC posted two runs in the first inning with a two-run homer by Vance. Three more runs were posted in the third on a fielder's choice, a single and a double. The Wolverines added another pair of runs in the fourth when Perry, who reached on a run-scoring double, scored with a Todd Bateman single. In the fifth, UVSC scored three more runs. During the inning, Kory Drew drove home a run with a double and the scored with a sacrifice fly. The third run of the fifth came when Brad Hales was hit-by-a-pitch with the bases loaded. The Wolverine their final runs in the eighth on a two-run double to center by Connor.
WSU posted solo runs in the second, fourth, sixth and seventh innings. McAngus scored the first Cougar run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Jason Freeman. WSU's run in the fourth came as a result of Murphy's second solo homer of the day. In the sixth, Everett went yard to right for his fifth home run this season. The Cougars posted their final run in the seventh when Rubin hit a sacrifice fly to plate Freeman.
The Cougars and Wolverines will play the final game of the four-game series Sunday at noon at Bailey-Brayton Field.
