Huskies Handle Cougars
March 20, 2005
PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington's 14th-ranked women's tennis team was given a tough test from the Washington State Cougars today, but the Huskies left town with a 4-2 victory in the non-conference match. With the win, the Huskies (11-4) snap a three match losing streak.
Leading the way for the Dawgs was their freshman pair of Tara Simpson and Allison Rainey. Simpson dispatched WSU's Amy Toth, 6-1, 6-1, in the No. 5 singles position. Rainey was just as dominant at sixth singles, where she downed Aleksandra Stefanova, 6-1, 6-0.
Washington's other two wins came via third sets as the Cougars fought hard for the upset. 34th-ranked junior Dinka Hadzic lost her first set, 6-4, to Orsolya Sallai at No. 2 singles, but rebounded to take the second set, 6-4, then cruised to a 6-0 win in the third. Sophomore Saskia Nauenberg also notched a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles over Nora Gaal.
UW's two seniors had a surprisingly tough day in Pullman. Sixth-ranked senior Dea Sumantri was upset, 7-5, 6-1 by Ekaterina Burduli in the top singles spot, while Mugette Ahn went down, 6-3, 6-4, to Chris Martinez in the No. 3 singles position.
Doubles was not played in the dual due to rains.
The Huskies next head home to host the Portland Pilots this Tuesday, March 24, for a 12 p.m. match.
