Beavers Rally For Baseball Win At Portland, 7-5

March 22, 2005

PORTLAND, Ore. - Shea McFeely's two-out, two-run double in the top of the eighth inning drove home the deciding runs as No. 23 Oregon State beat Portland 7-5 in non-conference baseball Tuesday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field. Nate Fogle pitched a scoreless final 3 2/3 innings for the Beavers (17-3), who won their fifth straight game.

OSU, ranked 23rd in the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll and No. 18 by Baseball America magazine this week, returns home to meet Dallas Baptist on Thursday at 4 p.m., Friday at 4 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m. at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. All three games can be heard on www.osubeavers.com.

On Tuesday, the Beavers outhit the Pilots (9-13) by a 14-4 margin but were in danger of losing to a Portland club that had a 9-0 record this season when leading or tied after seven innings. OSU had trailed 5-1 after four innings and was still down 5-4 after leaving the bases loaded in the top of the seventh.

In the eighth, Oregon State again loaded the bases on Tyler Graham's infield single, a walk to Geoff Wagner and an error on a grounder hit by Andy Jenkins. Pilot righthander Josh Roberts - who had saved three straight games against Pacific (Calif.) from March 11-13 - then gave up a line drive to left-centerfield by Mitch Canham. Leftfielder Justin Pierce made a diving catch to save an extra-base hit, but Graham tagged at third base and scored the tying run.

That brought McFeely to the plate, and the junior third baseman pulled a two-ball, two-strike pitch down the leftfield line to score pinch-runner Danny Anderson from second and Jenkins from first with the decisive runs.

'We got down quick, and we just had to come back and score the runs,' McFeely said. 'I was trying to hit something hard, but I got behind (in the count). I was sitting on a fastball outside but he threw me a curveball inside, and I just hit it hard.'

The Beavers, who have relied on pitching much of this season, have averaged 7.8 runs and 12 hits per game in their five-game winning streak.

'We're starting to hit the ball pretty well,' McFeely said. 'We're hitting the ball solid, even on the ones we're out on.'

OSU had started chipping away in the top of the fifth inning, getting a run-scoring groundout from Jenkins to make it 5-2. In the sixth, Darwin Barney had a run-scoring double down the leftfield line and then scored on Jacoby Ellsbury's single to make it 5-4.

Graham matched his career-high and season-high with four hits, going 4-for-5 and stealing a pair of bases as he bumped his batting average to .339 this season. Canham, McFeely and Mike Lissman were all 2-for-4 for the Beavers, and Jenkins pushed his hitting streak to nine games with a first-inning double.

Freshman righthander Daniel Turpen, making his first career start for OSU, retired the first six hitters he faced but Portland went in front 3-1 in the bottom of the third when a walk and a single set the stage for Justin Ehlers' three-run homer to rightfield. The Pilots tacked on a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth for their 5-1 lead.

Turpen, Kevin Joslyn, Kurt Steele and Fogle combined on the four-hitter, walking three and striking out eight. Turpen went 3 2/3 innings, allowing the five runs (three earned) on tdwo hits and two walks while striking out two. Fogle, who improved to 3-1 this season, allowed one hit in his 3 2/3 innings and didn't walk a hitter while striking out four; he retired the last nine hitters he faced and 11 of 12 overall.
