Brianne McGowan Named Pac-10 Softball Pitcher Of The Week
March 22, 2005
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Oregon State sophomore Brianne McGowan has been named the Pacific-10 Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week for March 15-21, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced on Tuesday.
McGowan, from Reno, Nev., led the Beavers to a pair of victories at the Capital Classic in Sacramento on Mar. 18 before tournament action was canceled due to rain, and a victory against No. 23 ranked Northwestern in a make-up game on Mar. 21.
The 6-2 right-hander was a perfect 3-0 on the week with two complete games and has won 10 straight outings. She held a 1.65 ERA to go along with 20 strike outs. McGowan matched her career-high with 10 strike outs against No. 23 Northwestern.
At the plate, McGowan hit .571 (4-for-7) in OSU's three wins, scoring a pair of runs, belting a double and home run, while tallying a team leading seven RBI and registering a 1.143 slugging percentage. McGowan was 1-for-1 with a 2-RBI double in the Beavers' 8-0 victory against Long Island on Mar. 18 and followed that game with a 3-run home run against Iowa. She went 2-for-3 from the plate with two RBI to help lead the Beavers past Northwestern on Mar. 21.
Oregon State (17-6) has won 11 consecutive games - the longest current winning streak in the Pac-10 - and is just one victory shy of the school record of 12 straight wins.
The Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honor is the first for McGowan in her career and marks Oregon State's 23rd all-time selection.
After playing its first 23 games away from Corvallis, Oregon State opens action at the OSU Softball Complex on Friday with a double-header against Brigham Young. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
