Husky Men's Golfers Win Duck Invitational

March 22, 2005

Eugene, OR - The 26th-ranked Washington men's golf team turned in a final round score of 2-under 286 to win the Oregon Duck Invitational by six strokes at the Eugene Country Club. The Huskies finished the 54-hole event at 4-under 860. Nevada and San Diego State tied for second at 866 while second-ranked Georgia Tech was fourth at 867. The Yellowjackets led after the first 36 holes before shooting 7-over 295 during Tuesday's final round.

Washington junior James Lepp tied Pepperdine's Michael Putnam for medalist honors. Both players shot 8-under 208 in the rainy, cold conditions. Putnam owned a three-stroke lead over Lepp entering the final round, but shot even-par 72 while Lepp posted a 3-under 69. It was Lepp's second straight round in the 60s. He carded a 6-under 66 during the second round.

The victory was Lepp's first as a Husky after playing his first two seasons at Illinois. He won four tournaments while competing for the Illini.

After a slow start last fall, Lepp has been the Huskies' top finisher in four of the team's last five events. This spring he has shot in the 60s in six of 12 rounds.

Lepp had plenty of help guiding Washington to its first tournament victory of the season. Freshman Zach Bixler was fourth overall at 3-under 213. It was Bixler's first top-10 showing as a Husky. Erik Olson was 12th at 217 while Alex Prugh rounded out UW's scoring in 37th place at 222. Travis Andrews was 70th at 231.

Washington had rounds of 290, 284 and 286 during the tournament. The victory keeps head coach Matt Thurmond's streak alive of guiding the team to at least one tournament win during each of his four seasons as the Huskies' coach.

The Huskies next outing it March 27-29 at the Wal-Mart National Invitational at Tucson National.
