Barbic finishes 22nd In 50 Free At NCAA Championships

MINNEAPOLIS-- Washington freshman Bruno Barbic placed 22nd today in the 50 freestyle in the opening day of the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships. He finished the event in a time of 19.82, just one-thousandth of a second slower than his school record time of 19.81 set at the Pac-10 Championships. He is the only UW swimmer ever to swim the event under 20 seconds.
Barbic will swim two more events at the national meet over the next two days, including the 100 and 200 freestyles.
Barbic is seeded 19th in the 100 freestyle with a UW school record time of 43.48. He set the record at the Pac-10 Championships last week and is the third-fastest freshman in the country.
Barbic is seeded 49th in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:38.67 set in a relay split at the Pac-10 Championships. He ranks seventh on the UW all-time list in the event.
The NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships will be hosted by the University of Minnesota and will take place at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center.
