Cougars Fall 13-2 In Opener Of Conference Play

Berkeley, Calif. -- - The Washington State baseball team opened Pacific-10 Conference play Thursday, falling to California 13-2 at Evans Diamond in Berkeley.

WSU's (15-11, 0-1 Pac-10) starting pitcher Jimmy Freeman (6-1) took his first loss of the season, giving up six runs, all earned on four hits, including a grand slam by Garrett Bussiere, and seven walks in two innings of work. Dane Renkert, Reese Baker and Grant Alexander saw time out of the WSU bullpen.

Eric Dworkis (3-3) earned the victory for the Bears (17-9, 1-0 Pac-10) shutting out WSU for seven innings, allowing six hits and walking three. Cal relievers Alec Harris and Jeremy Burchett each saw an inning of action on the hill.

'We didn't give ourselves a chance to win,' WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. 'Offensively, we couldn't string any hits together.'

The Cougars remained scoreless until the eighth inning when they plated their only two runs of the game. The pair of runs came on a single to center by Matt Thomas to drive home Jim Murphy and Zach Kosturos. For the game, WSU left 11 runners on base and failed to record any extra-base hits.

Cal posted the first run of the game in the second inning on a single by Mike Van Winden. The Bears added six more runs in the third, including Bussiere's grand slam. The remaining inning runs came on Van Winden's second run-scoring single of the game and a single by Brennan Boesch.

In the sixth inning the Bears sent nine batters to the plate, scoring four runs on singles by Van Winden, Chris Errecart and a two-run single by Matt Einspahr. Cal scored its final runs in the seventh when Allen Craig hit a two-run home run to left center field.

WSU's Wayne Daman Jr. (4-0) will get the start Friday when the Cougars and the Bears play the middle game of the three-game series at Evans Diamond. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
