UCLA Alumnus Jack Gifford Receives CEO Award
March 24, 2005
Nearly 1,700 of the nation's largest institutional investors, investment banks and analysts voted Jack Gifford (UCLA '63) the best Chief Executive Officer in the semiconductor industry, Institutional Investor Magazine announced recently.
Gifford, a former first baseman for the UCLA baseball team, is the CEO of Maxim Integrated Products, Inc., based in Sunnyvale, CA. The company, founded by Gifford in 1983, is an international leader in the design, development and manufacture of integrated circuits.
In voting that concluded in September 2004, Institutional Investor Magazine asked, 'Who do you regard the best CEO.' The views of over 1,250 portfolio managers and (buy side) analysts who are responsible for investing an estimated $5.9 trillion in U.S. equity assets were combined with the opinions of 425 (sell side) analysts at 85 brokerage firms. The results of this poll appeared in the January 2005 issue of the magazine.
A major benefactor for the UCLA golf and baseball programs, Gifford's donation in 2002 completely financed UCLA's on-campus golf practice facility. The facility, which includes a team performance center, boasts a natural grass tee area and a 3,000-square foot practice green available to the men's and women's teams at all times.
'UCLA Golf has been very fortunate to have met Mr. Jack and Rhodine Gifford,' said Head Coach O. D. Vincent. 'Their generosity and support have been instrumental in re-establishing the UCLA golf program. UCLA Golf attributes much of its student-athletes' recent success to being able to practice anytime on campus.'
Last season women's Head Coach Carrie Forsyth guided the Bruins to the NCAA title and Vincent led the men's team to a second place finish, the best-combined finishes for both programs.
'The golf programs are very proud of Jack's accomplishments,' Vincent continued. 'He embodies all of the principles that UCLA represents.'
On Mar. 30 at the Stanford Golf Course, the 13th ranked UCLA men's golf team will compete in a one-day match against Gifford's Maxim Masters. The team includes former Major League Baseball players Doug DeCinces (Angels) Todd Zeile (Mets, UCLA) and former UCLA and NFL wide receiver Mike Young. Other players are Gifford, Darryl Donovan, Randy Haag, Joe Root, Don Valentine, John Welsh and John Arrillaga.
