Beavers Sweep Dallas Baptist In Baseball, 7-2 and 11-3

March 25, 2005

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Jacoby Ellsbury was 4-for-7 with two home runs, two doubles, six runs batted in and two stolen bases for Oregon State as the 23rd-ranked Beavers swept Dallas Baptist 7-2 and 11-3 in non-conference baseball Friday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. Dallas Buck pitched a four-hitter and struck out 12 in the opener for OSU (19-4 overall), which did not allow an earned run in the doubleheader.

The Beavers and Patriots (17-12) concluded their series with two games on Friday to avoid the wet weather forecast for Saturday. OSU next plays host to Brigham Young on Monday at 5 p.m. and Tuesday at 1 p.m.; both games can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240) and www.osubeavers.com.

OSU's sweep ended an eight-game winning streak for Dallas Baptist, which had opened the series with a 17-7 win on Thursday.

'We pitched really well today and found a way in the second game to get some offense going,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'It was good to see that after the way we played Thursday night - I thought our guys responded real well. I'm excited about the way they responded to the whole thing.

'Now we've just got to have ourselves ready to go and try to figure out what we're going to do on Monday and Tuesday. But we definitely had to take care of business today and I thought our guys came out strong and played well.'

Added Ellsbury: 'Our mentality after Thursday's game was that we pretty much forgot about it - `What game?' We wanted to answer right away. We knew we had Dallas and Anton (Maxwell, OSU's starter in the second game) on the mound and our chances were good in both games. It was definitely good bouncing back after a loss like that. You never know how you're going to respond, so it was fun.'

DBU righthander Rodney Brantley kept the Beavers scoreless for the first three innings, but OSU loaded the bases with one out and then broke through on Darwin Barney's run-scoring single to center. Reliever Brice Wells walked Ryan Gipson to force in another run, then Ellsbury drove a full-count pitch over the rightfield fence for OSU's first grand slam of the season and a 6-0 lead.

'After that, it just kind of opened up,' said Ellsbury, who raised his batting average to .426 and now has three homers, 20 RBIs and 13 stolen bases. It seemed like we got comfortable at the plate, got our confidence going and it just kind of escalated. We just built off each other's momentum.'

That was all Buck needed. The sophomore righthander turned in the first complete game of his OSU career and his dozen strikeouts were a new career high, eclipsing the 10 that he fanned in a win over Sacramento State last weekend. He walked just one and was nicked for unearned runs in the fourth and eighth innings.

'There were a couple games last year and one or two this year where I felt pretty much the same as I did today,' said Buck, who improved his record to 5-0 this season and lowered his earned run average to 0.77. 'Before the game, Spence (pitching coach Dan Spencer) told me to try to get them to put it in play early so I could stay in longer. Usually that's what gets me taken out - the pitch count. Throw strikes early and hopefully they'll swing early.'

Buck's performance was also OSU's first complete game this season. Andy Jenkins was the only Beaver with more than one hit in the opener, going 2-for-3 with a double.

In the second game, the Beavers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning against Dallas Baptist righthander Tyler Rowland. Ellsbury led off with a double and Tyler Graham, Jenkins and Mitch Canham all had run-scoring singles in the inning.

OSU expanded its advantage to 7-0 in the second inning as Ellsbury hit a solo homer to right and Jenkins and Shea McFeely had run-scoring singles. The Patriots got within 7-3 in the top of the third when a two-out error opened the door for Drew Holder's three-run homer.

That was all DBU would get against Maxwell and relievers Nate Fogle and Kevin Gunderson, who combined on a five-hitter. Maxwell ran his record to 4-0 this season with six innings of work, allowing five hits and one walk while striking out three, then Fogle threw two perfect innings of relief and Gunderson retired the Patriots in order in the ninth.

Jenkins was 3-for-5 with three runs batted in during the second game and finished the doubleheader 5-for-8, bumping his batting average to .413 this spring. Ellsbury was 3-for-4 with the homer and two doubles in the second game, Geoff Wagner was 2-for-3 with a double, McFeely was 2-for-4 and Graham was 2-for-5.
