Arizona State Earns 2-1 Win In 10 Innings Against No. 23/21 USC
March 26, 2005
LOS ANGELES - Jeff Larish's sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th proved to be the game-winner Saturday as the Arizona State Sun Devils defeated the No. 23/21 USC Trojans, 2-1 in 10 innings, in Pac-10 Conference action at Dedeaux Field. Larish also hit his 12th homer of the season as ASU took two of three games this weekend.
Arizona State improved to 18-13 overall and 2-1 in Pac-10 play while USC falls to 14-8 on the season with a 1-2 conference mark.
Both starters, USC's Jack Spradlin and ASU's Jason Urquidez, did not figure in the decision although it was a pitchers' duel through eight innings. Urquidez allowed one run in eight innings, scattering six hits while Spradlin gave up one run on four hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.
Larish hit a solo shot to right in the fourth as the Sun Devils clinged to a 1-0 lead until the eighth inning. With two outs and a full count in the eighth, preseason All-America catcher Jeff Clement clubbed his fifth homer of the season and 36th in his career to right.
Travis Buck led off the ASU 10th with a walk against Paul Koss (2-1), followed by a single from Tuffy Gosewisch which moved Buck to third. Larish then lifted a fly ball to right to score the game-winner for the Sun Devils. Dale Legaspi led off the Trojan half with a leadoff double. He moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Billy Hart. Zechry Zinicola, who earned his second save of the season, struck out Blake Sharpe and intentionally walked Clement. Cyle Hankerd, who already had two hits on the afternoon, hit a ground ball to Seth Dhaenens and retired Clement at second to end the game.
Brett Bordes (2-3) picked up the win with an inning of relief for the Sun Devils.
USC travels to Loyola Marymount on Tuesday (March 28) for a 2 p.m. game before heading to Washington for a Pac-10 series next weekend. All four games will be broadcast live, with Gametracker live stats, on usctrojans.com.
