Arizona State Evens Pac-10 Series With 17-1 Win Over No. 23/21 USC

March 25, 2005

LOS ANGELES - Tuffy Gosewisch went 5-for-6 with a double, triple and four RBI Friday as the Arizona State Sun Devils defeated the No. 23/21 USC Trojans, 17-1, in Pac-10 Conference action at Dedeaux Field. The Sun Devils exploded for nine runs in the fourth inning and 22 hits for the game to snap the Trojans' five-game winning streak.

Pat Bresnehan (2-2) threw a complete game for the Sun Devils, allowing one unearned run off four hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Arizona State (17-13, 1-1) also got three-hit nights from Colin Curtis and Seth Dhaenens. Curtis had three RBI in the game, including a home run.

Brett Bannister (4-2) took the loss for USC, which dropped to 14-7 overall and 1-1 in Pac-10 play. Jeff Clement had a 2-for-3 night for the Trojans.

In the bottom of the third, Clement hit a 3-0 pitch into right field with Matt Cusick at first. ASU right fielder Rocky Laguna overran the ball for his first error. While trying to throw, the ball slipped out of Laguna's hand for his second error to score Cusick and move Clement to third. Bresnehan retired Billy Hart on a groundout to end the third.

Dhaenens singled to lead off the ASU fourth, followed by a walk to J.J. Sferra. Freshman shortstop Andrew Romine laid down a bunt single in front of home plate and the throw to first from Clement bounced off Cusick's glove. Cusick then threw the ball away, trying to get an out at the plate as Dhaenens and Sferra scored. Joey Hooft reached on a catcher's interference and Travis Buck reached on a sacrifice bunt as Hart registered his first error of the season with an errant throw that scored Romine. Gosewisch hit a two-run triple to right and Curtis later registered his first home run of the season with a two-run shot to right center. The Sun Devils added three more runs after that to finish the scoring.

The Sun Devils scored twice in the fifth and four times in the eighth. ASU's Jeff Larish hit his 11th home run of the season in the eighth with a two-run shot.

The rubber match of the series will take place tomorrow at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live, along with Gametracker live stats, on usctrojans.com.
