Beavers come up short vs Cougars
March 26, 2005
Oregon State Women's Rowing varsity boats came up just short against Washington State Saturday, while the OSU 1st Novice 8 posted a hard-fought win over the Cougars. The dual race marked the start of the Beavers' Pac-10 and NCAA racing season.
The teams battled through difficult conditions at Dexter Reservoir, with 10-15 MPH winds making the last half of the 2000-meter race course very rough. Although the water was choppy, the racing conditions remained rowable and fair throughout the morning races.
The 1st Varsity 8 and JV8 were about 6 seconds behind Washington State in their respective races, both getting out to strong starts but falling short in the last half of the race.
'It's always disappointing to lose,' said Head Coach Charlie Owen. 'But our boats raced well today, and I'm optimistic about the speed we'll gain over the course of the season. Washington State is a fast crew, and being competitive today shows that we're on track.'
The Beavers' dual with WSU came at the end of the team's intense week of training during the OSU spring break, and also marked the return of three seniors who had been sidelined through much of March due to injuries.
In the 1st Novice 8, the Beavers gained a slight lead off the start and continued to increase the margin over Washington State, working hard in the middle 1000 meters to eventually win the race by 5.5 seconds.
'I'm very happy with how the novice boats raced today,' said Freshman Coach Annie Kakela. 'It was a good experience in tough conditions.'
The Varsity Four finished second to WSU A, defeating two other Washington State fours in the event in a very tight race. The 2nd Novice 8 finished second to WSU, while the Novice 4 finished just behind WSU-A and WSU-B; only 2.1 seconds separated those three crews.
The Beavers opened the season three weeks ago with wins over the University of Victoria. They race April 2-3 at the San Diego Crew Classic, taking on tough competition from teams including: Texas, Tennessee, WSU, Notre Dame, UCLA, USC, Stanford and Cal.
