March 26, 2005
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - California finished fourth with 381 points at the NCAA Championships Saturday evening at the University of Minnesota's Aquatic Center. Auburn defended last year's national title with 491 points, while Stanford was second (414) and Arizona was third (388). Last season, the Golden Bears finished seventh at the NCAA Championships with 255.5 points.
Cal senior Duje Draganja won the 100-yard freestyle in an NCAA-record time of 41.49, breaking former Bear Anthony Ervin's previous NCAA record of 41.62. Draganja's swim tonight also was a U.S. Open and pool record and gave him his second individual national title of the championships. He won the 100-yard fly Friday in a Cal record time of 45.39.
Draganja's teammate, Rolandas Gimbutis, finished fifth in the 100 free (42.59) after tying for the top qualifying time this morning in the preliminaries (42.49).
Cal capped the 2005 NCAA Championships by winning the 400-yard freestyle relay in 2:47.70, which established new NCAA, U.S. Open and pool records. Draganja led off the relay, followed by Milorad Cavic, Jonas Tilly and Gimbutis. The Bears set the previous NCAA record of 2:48.99 in 2003. Thursday Cal claimed the 200-yard freestyle relay with a new NCAA record (1:15.78), and Friday the Bears were victorious in the 200-yard medley relay (1:25.30). Draganja was part of all five of Cal's NCAA titles -- two individual and three relays.
In the 200-yard breaststroke, Cal junior Henrique Barbosa placed seventh in 1:56.97, and senior Caleb Rowe took second in the consolation final to finish 10th overall (season best: 1:55.78). Alabama's Vladislav Polyakov won the event in 1:53.93 and set a new pool record.
