Anderson No-Hits UNC as No. 3 Cal Sweeps Two
March 26, 2005
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Senior Kelly Anderson tossed a no-hitter against North Carolina - her first in nearly two seasons - as the No. 3 California softball team defeated the Tar Heels, 5-0, and later beat Penn State, 8-0, on the second day of the Carolina Classic at the UNC Softball Complex.
Anderson (14-1) struck out 11 hitters and allowed four walks in throwing the first Cal no-hitter since teammate Kristina Thorson recorded a perfect game against Virginia on March 12, 2004. It was Anderson's first no-hitter since she threw one against Florida International on March 15, 2003. That season, the senior also tossed no-hitters against Minnesota (March 3) and Hawai'i (combined, Feb. 16).
Anderson was perfect through three and two-thirds innings on Saturday before allowing a walk to Tar Heel shortstop Anna Evans.
The Bears staked Anderson to the only run she would need in the first inning, as center fielder Kaleo Eldredge scored on a North Carolina throwing error. In the second, right fielder Emily Friedman's sacrifice bunt plated first baseman Julie Meyer and shortstop Chelsea Spencer doubled home Eldredge in the third for a 3-0 Cal lead. Friedman and third baseman Vicky Galindo added runs in the fifth.
In the nightcap, Cal second baseman Jessica Pamanian went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer and four RBIs as the Bears scored six runs in the seventh to bust open a 2-0 game against Penn State (15-11).
Left fielder Lindsay James added three hits and catcher Haley Woods had a pair of doubles. Thorson struck out five to improve to 13-2 and Cal upped its record to 28-3. The Bears finish the Carolina Classic Easter Sunday against Penn State at 7 a.m. PST.
