Huskies Name Joey Hildbold Defensive Graduate Assistant
March 29, 2005
Seattle - Former Notre Dame punter Joey Hildbold has been hired as a defensive graduate assistant coach for the Washington football team, first-year head coach Tyrone Willingham announced Tuesday. The hiring completes the Washington football coaching staff for the 2005 season.
A 2003 graduate of the University of Notre Dame, Hildbold will work with Washington's defensive coaches, preparing game plans and coordinating the team's defensive coaching efforts. Hildbold joins offensive graduate assistant Kyle Benn, a former UW center in his second year with the Husky coaching staff.
Hildbold established himself as one of the finest punters in Notre Dame history during his four-year collegiate career, including one season under current Washington head coach Tyrone Willingham. The Centreville, Va., native set Notre Dame's single-season punting record with 78 in 2002, and finished his career ranked sixth in Notre Dame history with a 40.3 yards-per-punt average. Hildbold twice earned preseason All-America honors from Street and Smith's, and was a two-time semifinalist for the Ray Guy Award, given to the nation's top collegiate punter.
