No. 13 Bruins Head to Oregon

March 29, 2005

Bruins Head to Oregon . . .
The No. 13 UCLA women's tennis team (11-4; 4-1 Pac-10) has just one match on its plate this week, as the Bruins head to Eugene, Ore. for a Noon showdown with the 22nd-ranked Oregon Ducks (13-4; 2-3 Pac-10). UCLA posted a 6-1 victory over the Ducks last year at the LATC, pushing its all-time record against Oregon to 9-0. The Ducks will be the 10th top-25 opponent UCLA has faced this year.

Bruins Get a Pair of Wins in Arizona . . .
After both matches against the Arizona schools were rained out in Los Angeles earlier in the year, UCLA hit the road this past weekend for its first meetings of the season against both Arizona and Arizona State. The Bruins were forced to rally somewhat against Arizona State on Saturday after being swept in all three doubles matches. UCLA, however, was able to recover in singles play by winning five of six matches. Daniela Bercek and Riza Zalameda's loss in doubles snapped a seven match winning streak for the duo. The Bruins were able to claim the doubles point against Arizona on Saturday, adding four more points in singles play to come away with 5-2 win.

UCLA Checks in at No. 13 . . .
UCLA moved down a spot to No. 13 in this week's ITA National Team Rankings released on Tuesday. Individually, freshman Riza Zalameda remains the highest ranked Bruin singles player at No. 18 in the country. She is followed by No. 32 Daniela Bercek and No. 85 Laura Gordon. In doubles, Bercek and Zalameda remained at No. 3. New team rankings are released every Tuesday. Individual rankings are not due out again until April 5.

Race For the Pac-10 Title . . .
UCLA is still alive in the race for this year's Pac-10 title. The Bruins enter the week with a 4-1 record in conference play, with just three league matches remaining. UCLA would most likely have to win all three and hope Stanford defeats USC on April 8 in order to earn a share of the title. The Bruins' match against USC on April15 will not count towards the conference standings.

Bruins Perfect at Home . . .
UCLA has not dropped a match at the Los Angeles Tennis Center this year, owning a perfect 5-0 record. All four of the Bruins' losses this year have been either at a neutral site (Team Indoors) or on the road. Fortunately for UCLA, arguably its biggest match of the year against top-ranked Stanford will be on the LATC on April 9. Although the Bruins lost to the Cardinal once already this season, the April 9 match is the one that will count in the Pac-10 standings.

Head Coach Stella Sampras Webster . . .
Stella Sampras Webster is in her ninth season as head coach at UCLA, owning an overall record of 144-81 (.640). In her eight seasons in Westwood, the Bruins have finished in the top-10 at the NCAA Championships seven times, including a trip to the finals in 2004. As a player, Sampras Webster was a four-time All-American at UCLA from 1988-91, capturing the NCAA Doubles title (w/Allyson Cooper) as a freshman in 1988.
