Stanford Softball Splits Doubleheader At Fresno State

Fresno, Calif. - The Stanford softball team split a doubleheader tonight against Fresno State in a non-conference Monday night matchup at Bulldog Stadium in Fresno, Calif. The Cardinal dropped the first game, 4-1, and won the second 14-0 in five innings, Stanford is now 24-5 overall while the Bulldogs are 21-8.
In game one, the Bulldogs scored early in the game, notching four runs in the bottom of the second to chase starting pitcher Laura Severson from the circle.
Jamie Southern (11-2) picked up the win for Fresno State, scattering three hits and one run over seven innings of work with seven strikeouts. Junior Laura Severson (11-3) took the loss for the Cardinal, allowing four runs on three hits in 1.1 innings. Freshman Lauren Nydam came in for Stanford in relief, pitching 4.2 scoreless innings.
In game two, Lappin got things started with an infield single. Michelle Smith followed that with a hard hit off the pitcher's glove that turned into a double to leftfield. With runners and second and third, Leah Nelson drew a walk. Meghan Sickler singled to bring home Lappin and Smith, then moved to second on the throw home. With two outs on the board, Erin Howe drew a walk to load the bases. Anna Beardman singled to rightfield as Nelson and Sickler scored.
Catalina Morris led off the top of the second with her eighth homerun of the season - a solo shot to left centerfield. After a pitching change by the Bulldogs, Lappin drew a walk. With one out, Leah Nelson singled to rightfield, putting runners on the corners. Meghan Sickler singled to center, scoring Lappin to make the score, 6-0.
Lappin led off the fourth inning with a double to right centerfield, followed by a walk to Michelle Smith. After a Fresno State pitching change, Leah Nelson singled through the leftside, scoring Lappin. Pinch hitter Lindsay Key then homered to leftfield to empty the bases. With two outs, Anna Beardman drew a walk. Jackie Rinehart followed with a single through the leftside. Catalina Morris then blasted her second homerun of the game to centerfield, clearing the bases.
Stanford scored one more in the top of the fifth as Key doubled to left centerfield to score pinch hitter Heather Shook.
Catalina Morris ended the night going 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored. Lindsay Key went 2-for-2 with four RBI as well. Lauren Lappin had a 2-for-3 effort with three runs scored. Leah Nelson and Meghan Sickler added two hits each as well.
Freshman hurler Becky McCullough (7-0) pitched four shutout innings with four strikeouts for the win. The Bulldogs Amanda Nesbitt (4-4) took the loss, allowing five runs on five hits in one inning of work.
The Cardinal open Pac-10 play this weekend at the Arizona schools beginning with the Wildcats on Friday, April 1, at 7 p.m. in Tucson. Stanford will take on Arizona State on Saturday and Sunday at 7 p.m. and 1 p.m. respectively.
