USC Gets True Team Effort In 12-4 Win At Loyola Marymount
March 29, 2005
LOS ANGELES - Preseason All-America catcher Jeff Clement went 3-for-4 with a double, home run and two RBI Tuesday as the USC Trojans defeated the Loyola Marymount Lions, 12-4, in nonconference action at George Page Stadium. Senior Dale Legaspi made his first start of the season, drawing four walks and hitting a two-run triple in the number nine spot in the Trojans' lineup.
Clement is making a push for the Johnny Bench Award as the top collegiate catcher in the nation, batting .364 for the season with six home runs and 22 RBI while throwing out 10-of-22 baserunners.
Billy Hart and Matt Cusick also homered for the Trojans. Hart went 2-for-6 with four RBI, including a two-run triple. USC snaps a two-game losing streak and improves to 15-8 overall while LMU falls to 9-15 on the season.
Jon Williams (1-0) made his first start of the season to earn the win with the prearranged start, allowing just one unearned run on two hits in three innings of work. Freshman Anthony Encinas threw two perfect innings in relief for the Trojans.
A.J. LaMonda went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI in a losing cause for the Lions.
Hart got his two-run triple in the fourth when he squared to bunt and pulled it back at the last second, slashing a line drive to the fence to score Clement and Cyle Hankerd as the Trojans held a 5-1 lead. The Lions scored twice in the fifth with the tying run at the plate, but Encinas retired designated hitter Evan Shahak on a fly ball to end the inning.
In the top of the sixth, USC sent 10 runners to the plate as part of a five-run inning. Cusick led off with a solo shot to right, his second of the season. Clement later homered with a solo shot to left center for his sixth of the season and 37th of his career. Hart capped the scoring in the eighth with a two-run homer to left center for his second round-tripper of the season.
USC travels to Washington for a Pac-10 series starting on Friday (April 1) at 6:30 p.m. with 1 p.m. starts on Saturday (April 2) and Sunday (April 3).
