March 30, 2005
The No. 14 USC men's golf squad travels down south to compete in the 2005 Augusta State University Invitational this Saturday and Sunday, April 2-3, at the Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia.
The tournament, hosted by the Augusta Golf Association and presented for the first time by Administaff, is known to draw strong fields each season and will continue the tradition this weekend as it boasts one of the top fields in the country.
Ten of the 18 schools set to compete in the tournament are ranked in the nation's top 30 and all of the teams are ranked among the top 103 in the nation, according to the latest rankings released by Golfweek magazine. Third-ranked Georgia, ninth-ranked Wake Forest and 11th-ranked Duke are the only teams that lead the Trojans in the rankings.
'It's the best golf in Augusta anybody can see for free,' said tournament director Grady Smith. 'The next time you see a lost of these guys, you'll have to pay to watch to watch them - that's how good a lot of them are...Hopefully, we'll have some great weather and great crowds.'
There is a practice round Friday, April 1 at the par 72, 7,231-yard course for all interested teams. The 54-hole tournament commences at 8:00 a.m. Saturday. The teams will play 36 holes the first day with a final 18-hole round on Sunday morning.
