Women's Basketball Has Three Players Receive Pac-10 All-Academic Recognition

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Oregon State University women's basketball team had three players receive 2005 Pacific-10 Conference honorable mention All-Academic accolades, as was announced by Commissioner Tom Hansen on Wednesday. Senior Jessica Mellinger and juniors Mandy Close and Karen Vickery were honored for their work on the court and in the classroom.
Both Close and Vickery were named to the honorable mention All-Academic team last year as well.
To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and be either a starter or significant contributor.
Mellinger finished her four-year career ranked fourth in Oregon State history with 121 games played. The 5-8 Brush Prairie, WA, native, holds a 3.15 GPA as an Exercise and Sports Science major. Mellinger saw action in 27 games on the year and held an 80-percent clip from the free throw line.
Close, a 5-11 guard from Bozeman, MT, boasts a 3.33 GPA as a Human Development and Family Studies major. Close finished the season as the Beavers' third leading scorer with 8.5 points per game and ranked second on the squad in assists with 54. She became just the fourth guard in Oregon State history to pull down 100 rebounds in back-to-back seasons after snagging 101 boards.
Vickery, a 6-2 post from Vale, OR, played in all 29 games, scoring 107 points and pulling down 63 rebounds. She currently holds a 3.13 GPA as a Mathematics major.
