Caitlin Noble Holds Off Oregon In Pac-10 Opener

EUGENE, Ore.-- Washington freshman Caitlin Noble held Oregon (20-10, 0-1 Pac-10) to one hit over. 2.1 innings of relief this afternoon to hold off the Ducks and lead the 17th-ranked softball team (17-9, 1-0 Pac-10) to the 4-3 victory in its Pac-10 opener.

The Huskies took the early lead in the first inning with a towering three-run home run by Aimee Minor. Freshman Ashley Charters was hit by a pitch to lead off the game and the Ducks intentionally walked Kristen Rivera. With two outs, Minor belted the first pitch over the left field fence for her 10th home run of the season.

Washington added to its lead in the second inning with an unearned run. With two outs, Jacki Hansen reached base on a throwing error by the third baseman. Charters then laced a line drive into centerfield to score Hansen and put UW on top 4-0.

Oregon got on the scoreboard in the third inning with one run to cut Washington's lead to 4-1. Lovena Chaput led off the frame with a triple to left center and scored on a single up the middle by Beth Boscovich.

Senior pitcher Ashley Boek struck out the side in the fourth inning but gave up three runs in the fifth frame to trigger a pitching change. Chaput walked and moved to third base on a double by Suzie Barnes. Boscovich walked to load the bases and Kristi Leiter singled through the left side to score Chaput. Ashley Richards then walked to score Barnes to come within one run at 4-3. The Huskies brought in Noble who tallied a strikeout to end the inning.

Senior Kathy Fiske, who made her first appearance since breaking her hand on Feb. 13, hit a two-out single in the sixth but UW could not hit her in.

Noble sat Oregon down in order in the bottom of the sixth with a ground out and two strikeouts.

The Ducks threatened in the bottom of the seventh as Barnes led of with a line drive into right field and Boscovich drew a walk. Oregon attempted to bunt the runners over but T.J. Eadus pop-up to Fiske at third. Noble got the next batter to pop-out to shortstop but Oregon loaded the bases when Richards reached on a fielding error. Pinch hitter Ann Marie Topps went down in the count 0-2 but nearly spoiled Washington's conference opener with a fly ball over the left field fence that went just foul. Noble struck out Topps to end the game and pick up her first career save.

'It's great to start the Pac-10 season off with a win,' said head coach Heather Tarr. 'We're going to build on it.'

Boek (11-5) picked up the win as she scattered four hits and three runs over 4.2 inning with four strikeouts.

Lindsey Kontra (4-2) took the loss for Oregon as she gave up four runs on two hits over 1.2 innings of work.

Noble allowed just one hit and struck out four in 2.1 innings of relief.
