April 1, 2005
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Natalie Coughlin led a group of current and former California swimmers that qualified on Friday morning for tonight's finals at USA Swimming's long course World Championship Trials. Coughlin qualified for the 100-meter butterfly by finishing first in a time of 58.97, the third fastest time in the world this year, in the preliminary on the first day of the meet held at the Indiana University Natatorium.
The top 24 swimmers in each event qualify for the finals of the World Championship Trials, which end on April 6. This meet will determine the men's and women's teams that will represent the United States at the 2005 World Championships held this July in Montreal, Canada. The meet will also determine which college swimmers or recent graduates will represent the United States at the 2005 World University Games held this August in Izmir, Turkey. Athletes are not eligible to swim on both the U.S. World Championships and U.S. World University Games teams.
Current Bears senior Caleb Rowe finished seventh in the preliminary of the men's 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:02.91. Ashley Chandler, a Cal junior, took eighth (4:15.97) in the women's 400-meter freestyle. Coughlin, Rowe and Chandler swim for the California Aquatics club.
Freshman John Foster, who joined Rowe on the Cal team that took fourth place at the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships last Saturday, placed 21st (4:03.30) in the men's 400 free prelim. Foster is swimming for Irvine Novaquatics.
Sophomore Erin Reilly, who joined Chandler on Cal's eighth-place team at the recent women's NCAA Championships, was 25th in the women's 400 free prelim. Reilly also swims for California Aquatics.
The finals began tonight at 6 p.m. ET.
