Swimming and Diving Places 15 on Pac-10 All-Academic Team

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Fifteen Sun Devils have been named to the 2005 Pac-10 Conference Swimming and Diving All-Academic teams, Pac-10 Commissioner Tom Hansen announced Thursday. The men's swimming and diving team places six on the all-academic teams while the women earn nine spots.
For the men, seniors Jeff Barrett and Kyle Horton were both named to the all-academic first team. For Barrett, who carries a 3.8 GPA in English Literature, it marks his first career all-academic selection. Horton, who carries at 3.71 GPA and is studying finance at ASU, earns his third all-academic team selection. Horton was name to the Pac-10 All-Academic second-team in 2003 and earned first-team all-academic honors last season.
Seniors Bobby Crowder and Emerson Ward and junior Joona Puhakka were named to the Pac-10 All-Academic second-team. Crowder and Puhakka are first time honorees while Ward earns his second all-academic accolade. Sophomore Pat Fleming was named as a Pac-10 All-Academic honorable-mention selection to earn his first academic honor as a Sun Devil.
For the women, sophomore Jill Kripps was the lone Sun Devil woman named to the Pac-10 All-Academic first team. Kripps holds a 4.0 GPA and is studying nursing at ASU.
Senior Cara DeVinny, junior Sandra Steffensen and sophomore Amanda Gillespie were named to the Pac-10 All-Academic second team. DeVinny and Gillespie earn all-academic accolades for the first time in their career. Steffensen earns her second all-academic honor. She was named to the Pac-10 All-Academic first-team last season.
ASU had five women who were named to the Pac-10 All-Academic honorable-mention team, including seniors Ágnes Kovács and Florencia Szigeti, junior Erin Baldinger and sophomores Christine Creek and Cassidy Farwell.
Kovács earned Pac-10 All-Academic honors for the third time in her career, while it marks the first honor for Baldinger, Creek, Farwell and Szigeti.
To be eligible for selection to the Pac-10 All-Academic teams, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall GPA and be either a starter or significant contributor.
