Women's Golf In 16th In Tempe

April 1, 2005

TEMPE, Ariz.- - After round one of the PING/ASU Invitational, the Oregon State women's golf team is in 16th place with a team total of 316 at the par-72 Karsten Golf Course.

Freshmen Julie Uhrik and Jessi Gebhardt led the Beavers with rounds of 78 and are tied for 52nd. Uhrik began the back nine with a costly triple bogey, but rebounded with three birdies in the final eight holes, while Gebhardt carded one birdie and just three bogeys on the back side.

'The play was difficult today with the strong winds and we didn't play the par-5s well,' said Coach Risë Lakowske, 'but we were even par on the par-3s, so that's a strong indication of what they can do.

'If the wind keeps up tomorrow it'll be something they have to learn to deal with and I'm confident that they can.'

UCLA holds the overall lead with a 3-over 291, with tournament host Arizona State and Oregon just four strokes back.

The Bruins' Susie Mathews and the Sun Devils' Louise Stahle turned in the best individual rounds of the day and share the lead at 2-under 70. Mathews had five birdies and an eagle on the day, while Stahle carded a bogey-free round with two birdies.

Sophomore Jill Ferrante struggled on the back nine but finished the day with a 79 and is tied for 64th.

Senior Kelly Kerkvliet posted an 81 and senior Alex Lucio finished one stroke behind with an 82.

'Overall, the round was not bad,' added Lakowske. 'We had no major miscues, but there were just too many bogeys. There are some course management issues we need to improve upon and I think they are doing that.

'Playing without Leah (Whiting) is giving the younger players a lot of experience that should help us down the line, and tomorrow we should see some marked improvement.'

The second round begins Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. MST.
