Buck, Bullpen Combine On Four-Hitter

April 1, 2005

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Jacoby Ellsbury had four hits for Oregon State and Dallas Buck, Kevin Gunderson and Eddie Kunz combined to pitch a four-hitter as the Beavers beat California 11-1 in Pacific-10 baseball Friday night at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. For OSU (22-4 overall, 1-0 Pac-10), ranked 23rd in this week's USA Today/ESPN coaches poll and 18th by Baseball America magazine, it was the 1,800th all-time win for a varsity program dating back to 1907.

OSU and Cal (20-10, 3-1) meet again Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m., and both games can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240) and www.osubeavers.com.

'Everybody wants to win that first game and we did, but it's just one game in a three-game series,' said OSU head coach Pat Casey, whose team won its fifth straight. 'We've got to get ourselves ready to go again Saturday, and we're playing a good baseball team.'

On a cool night in front of a crowd of 947, a pair of sterling defensive plays by freshman shortstop Darwin Barney helped Buck and the Beavers hang onto a 2-0 lead until OSU came up with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and five more in the bottom of the eighth.

In the top of the fifth, the Golden Bears advanced Kyle Spraker to third base with one out and Mike Van Winden skied a ball down the leftfield line. Barney, third baseman Shea McFeely and leftfielder Tyler Graham gave chase; Barney made the grab about 100 feet behind third base and quickly got the ball back to the infield, holding Spraker at third. Buck then struck out Stephen Carlson to end the inning with the score still 2-0.

With one out and none on in the sixth, Brennan Boesch looped a ball into shallow centerfield and Barney was able to make a twisting catch for the second out to keep the tying run from coming to the plate.

'The play Darwin made down the line and the play he made up the middle brought tremendous energy to us,' Casey said. 'Those little things are important. Those are great plays, and sometimes they're overlooked in the boxscore but he made two tremendous plays.'

Barney also had his second straight three-hit game, going 3-for-5. He got OSU on the scoreboard in the second inning when he led off with a triple to right-center and scored on a single to left by Geoff Wagner, who has a hit in four of his last five games.

Barney bumped his batting average to .311 as the Beavers came up with 13 hits against four Cal pitchers. Shea McFeely was 2-for-3 with a double for OSU.

'We hit a lot better today with runners on base,' Barney said. 'We still left a few runners on (11), but we got runners on all the time. Momentum is in our favor right now, and we've got to build on it.'

Ellsbury was 4-for-6 with two runs and one stolen base and is now batting .440 this season after his 13th multi-hit game of the year. On OSU's lists of all-time leaders, he climbed into a tie for eighth in hits (185), sole possession of sixth in runs (135) and a tie for ninth in total bases (269).

Buck improved his record to 6-0 this season as the sophomore righthander went seven innings and allowed one run on four hits and three walks, striking out seven. Buck now has 70 strikeouts in 53 2/3 innings of work. Kevin Gunderson then went 1 1/3 innings and Kunz picked up the final two outs; each reliever recorded a strikeout.

'Dallas was sharp. We put him in a situation where we could have gotten him out of an inning a little sooner defensively but he threw a couple extra pitches,' Casey said. 'Gundy (Gunderson) was as sharp as I've seen him all year long, and that was nice to see.'

Josh Satin was 2-for-2 for California. Eric Dworkis took the loss for the Golden Bears, pitching 5 2/3 innings and allowing six runs on 10 hits and four walks, striking out none.
