Canham Boosts Beavers To Win

April 2, 2005

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Mitch Canham homered and drove in three runs as Oregon State beat California 5-2 in Pacific-10 baseball Saturday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. Anton Maxwell earned the pitching win to improve his record to 5-0 this season while Kevin Gunderson picked up his sixth save for the Beavers (23-4 overall, 2-0 Pacific-10).

OSU and California (20-11, 3-2) wrap up their series on Sunday at 1 p.m. The game can be heard on KEJO-AM and www.osubeavers.com.

Coupled with Oregon State's 11-1 win on Friday night, Saturday's win clinched the series for OSU. It was the Beavers' first home series win in conference play since the 2002 season and gives the Beavers a 12-2 record this season at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.

'Even though we went up on them quite a bit Friday, we knew they are a good team and we had to come out and play our best, day-in and day-out,' Canham said. 'That's what these guys, our leaders do - they push everyone to get out there. Like (senior co-captain) Andy Jenkins - every time we come out to the ballyard, he's pushing us all to go out there and play as hard as we can. He's not going to take a half-effort from us.'

Canham's two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning gave Oregon State a 2-1 lead and returned momentum to the Beavers. The two-ball, two-strike shot to right-centerfield off Cal righthander Adam Gold was the sophomore catcher's third homer of the year.

'Hits are contagious, that's what everybody says,' Canham said. 'He just left a fastball down the middle, and with two strikes that's a great pitch for him to throw me - I don't mind that at all. I just got a good barrel on it, and sometimes the ball flies off the bat in certain ways.'

After the Golden Bears tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth inning, Canham came back in the top of the sixth with a run-scoring single to plate what turned out to be the winning run. After Jenkins was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Darwin Barney singled to left, Canham had gone to the plate to bunt the runners over but missed on his two attempts.

'I didn't get the job done, so my main objective was to get the guy over any way I could,' Canham said. 'I was just trying to hit a ball and put one up the middle somewhere, but definitely put one in play.'

Canham then fouled off a pair of pitches before lining a single to right-center to score Jenkins. After Shea McFeely's successful sacrifice, Mike Lissman delivered a sacrifice fly to score Barney and make it 4-2.

OSU tacked on its final run in the bottom of the eighth inning loading the bases on a McFeely single, a hit batter and a walk with two out. Tyler Graham then legged out an infield single on a high chopper over the mound to drive in McFeely.

Maxwell went six innings for the win, allowing two runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out one. The sophomore lefthander managed to wriggle out of jams that left eight Golden Bears stranded, including four in scoring position.

'His ball is moving a lot,' Canham said. 'He really doesn't let that other stuff bother him. You see some guys lose their composure, but he's grown up for the kind of pitcher he is. He's real smart. He knows how to compete.'

Gunderson, tied for the Pac-10 lead in saves entering the week, worked the final three innings. He allowed two hits and no walks while striking out none.

OSU's Jacoby Ellsbury went 1-for-4, extending his hitting streak to nine games and leaving his batting average at .434. McFeely was 2-for-2 for the Beavers while Graham, Barney and Canham were all 2-for-4.

For California, Chris Errecart was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and Josh Satin, Garrett Bussiere and Matt Einspahr were all 2-for-4.
