Cardinal Softball Falls To Arizona 4-2

Tucson, Ariz. - The No. 2 Arizona softball team handed the seventh-ranked Stanford Cardinal a 4-2 loss to open conference play before a crowd of 1,822 at Hillenbrand Stadium in Tucson, Arizona. The Wildcats improve to 27-2 overall, 1-0 in the Pac-10 while the Cardinal drop to 24-6 on the year, 0-1 in league action.
Junior Catalina Morris led off the top of the first with a single to centerfield. Shortstop Lauren Lappin tried to lay down a sacrifice bunt but the pitcher threw it away, allowing both Morris and Lappin the score as the ball rattled around in the rightfield foul territory.
The Wildcats got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning when Caitln Lowe scored on a fielder's choice by Jaclyn Coburn.
Arizona evened up the score with a run in the bottom of the third as Coburn hit a single up the middle to score Lowe.
The Wildcats took the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Shelly Schultz picked up the RBI when her fielder's choice scored Lowe. Arizona scored a second run on an error by the shortstop to go up 4-2.
Becky McCullough (7-1) took the loss of Stanford, allowing four runs on eight hits over six innings of work in the circle. Alicia Hollowell (18-1) picked up the win for the `Cats, holding the Cardinal to two runs on seven hits over seven innings with 12 strikeouts on the night.
Stanford is back in action tomorrow night at 7 p.m. against Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz. They will close out the road trip with a 1 p.m. game versus the Sun Devils on Sunday
