Men's Tennis Falls to California, 6-1

TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State University men's tennis team was in action against California Saturday afternoon at the Whiteman Tennis Center. The Sun Devils fell to the Golden Bears 6-1. With the loss ASU falls to 6-11 and 0-4 in Pac-10 play while California improves to 8-9 and 2-2 in the Pac-10.
California took two of the three doubles matches to earn the first point of the day. On Court No. 2, ASU's tandem of Clinton Letcher and Jonathan Kinsella upended California's duo of Lennard Maack and Dean Wallace, 8-3, to give the Sun Devils the early edge. California battled back as the team of Ken Nakahara and John Pettit took the win on Court No. 3 against ASU's team of Ryan McBride and Nick Hegarty, 8-5. The Golden Bears secured the doubles point on Court No. 1 when the Sun Devils' duo of Andy Colombo and Mike Beatty were unable to top the Golden Bears tandem of Conor Niland an dPatrick Briaud, as California took the match, 8-3.
In singles action the Sun Devils put up a fight but were unable to overcome the Golden Bears, as California took five of the six singles matches to take the Pac-10 dual. First off the courts was action at the No. 1 singles position, with California's Niland topping ASU's Letcher in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. The Golden Bears Daniel Sebescen followed suit for California defeating ASU's McBride at No. 4 singles in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Securing the victory for California was Tyler Browne as he topped ASU's Beatty, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 6 singles spot.
ASU's Kinsella went down after the first set at the No. 2 singles position, but battled back to take the second set against California's Maack to force the match to a third set, but Maack was able to overcome Kinsella in the final set to take the match, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
The Sun Devils' Hegarty earned the Sun Devils only point of the afternoon at the No. 5 singles spot. Hegarty went up early after taking the first set against the Golden Bears Nakahara, but Nakahara forced the match into a third set where Hegarty took the final set to earn the win, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. At the No.3 singles position, ASU's Christopher Biro took the first set to go up on California's Briaud. Briaud battled back, taking the second set to force the match into a tiebreaker. Briaud came out strong in the tiebreaker, topping Biro, 6-7 (7). 7-6 (5), 1-0(7), to round out the afternoon at the courts.
The Arizona State University men's tennis team is back in action Friday, April 8 and Sunday April, 10 as they travel to Oregon and Washington for Pac-10 action.
