Men's Varsity Eights Defeats Cal In San Diego

The Stanford Men's Varsity Eight defeated Cal in Saturday mornings CopelyCup Heat. Stanford posted the fastest time of the day, covering the 2,000meter course in 5:57.6, followed by 6 time defending champion Cal in6:00.01. The two crews will be joined by Navy, Northeastern, Penn, andPurdue in Sunday afternoon's final. Coach Craig Amerkhanian described theperformance as 'team driven' and expressed high praise for Stanford'sfinals bound Second Varsity and Frosh/Novice eights.
Led by Senior coxswain Zack Cooper and Senior Stroke and Captain DavidBanks, the Cardinal Varsity led from start to finish. Cal came into therace ranked second in the nation. The Cardinal will attempt to win theCopely Cup for the first time in 32 years of Crew Classic racing.
