OSU Still 16th In Arizona

April 2, 2005

TEMPE, Ariz.- - The Oregon State women's golf team was unable to move up the leaderboard Saturday and remains in 16th place after round two of the Ping/ASU Invitational at the par-72 Karsten Golf Course. The Beavers have a team total of 637.

The best round of the day for Oregon State was carded by freshman Jessi Gebhardt with a 1-over 73, including three birdies and four bogeys. Gebhardt, who was tied for 52nd after round one, moved up 20 places Saturday and is currently tied for 32nd.

'Jessi is really learning how to manage the golf course better,' said Coach Risë Lakowske. 'She's doing much better hitting shots appropriate for the situation.'

First-round leader UCLA held onto the overall lead after posting a 1-under 287 on the round and maintains a four-stroke advantage at 578 over host Arizona State with one round to play.

ASU's Louise Stahle and UCLA's Susie Mathews swapped positions as Stahle took over the individual lead from Mathews after firing a 4-under 68. Stahle holds a two-stroke lead at 6-under 138.

Freshman Julie Uhrik, after a difficult first nine, rebounded with just one bogey and eight pars on the final nine and finished the round with a 79. She is currently 66th with a 157.

'Julie made a good adjustment on her final nine holes today,' added Lokowske.

Senior Kelly Kerkvliet has a 164 and senior Alex Lucio is at 168.

Sophomore Jill Ferrante's score was disqualified due to an incorrectly signed scorecard.

Lakowske hopes the final round will continue to be a learning experience:

'They're doing the best they can, but without Leah (Whiting) in the lineup, it hurts us. Our goal is to continue to learn, put the ball in better spots, and just do better overall.'

Final-round play begins Sunday morning at 7:30 a.m.
