Spradlin Goes The Distance In USC's 5-1 Win
April 2, 2005
SEATTLE, Wash. - Junior Jack Spradlin (Bonita/Eastlake HS/Southwestern College) threw his first complete game of the season Saturday as the USC Trojans defeated the Washington Huskies, 5-1, in Pac-10 Conference action at Husky Ballpark. Spradlin allowed one run on nine hits as every member of the Huskies' lineup recorded just one hit each.
With the win, the Trojans secure the series victory after a 2-1 win on Friday as USC (17-8, 3-2) has now won eight of its last 10 games. Washington falls to 17-12 on the season and 1-4 in conference play.
Jeff Clement extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a 2-for-4 performance with two RBI. Clement, a candidate for the Johnny Bench Award as the top collegiate catcher in the nation, is batting .545 (18-for-33) during the streak and .714 (10-for-14) in his last five games.
The Trojans started off with a run in the first when designated hitter Baron Frost lined an RBI single to right. Hector Estrella, who hit a two-run homer in Friday's win, knocked in an RBI single to left in the second. After a balk called against Washington starter Kyle Parker (4-4) moved to Estrella to third, Dale Legaspi delivered a suicide squeeze bunt back to the mound to plate Estrella for a 3-0 USC lead.
Washington scored its lone run in the third when Brent Lillibridge hit an infield single to first to score his brother, Kiel, from third. With runners at the corners, Spradlin got Zach Clem to ground out into a 6-3 double play to end the inning. The Huskies loaded the bases in the sixth with two outs, but pinch hitter Matt Lane's grounder went up the middle right to second base where Blake Sharpe was there to record the unassisted out.
Clement hit a two-run, bases-loaded single in the sixth to chase Parker, who gave up five runs and walked seven in 5 2/3 innings.
Freshman Matt Cusick went 2-for-3 for the Trojans with two singles.
The series concludes tomorrow at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live, along with Gametracker live stats, on usctrojans.com.
