Women's Tennis Drops 4-3 To No. 21 Tulane

April 2, 2005

SEATTLE, Wash. - Washington's women's tennis team suffered a second straight 4-3 defeat today, this time at the hands of the 21st-ranked Tulane Green Wave. Dea Sumantri, Mugette Ahn, and Tara Simpson all recorded singles wins for the 19th-ranked Huskies (12-7, 1-3 Pac-10) but it wasn't enough to prevent the Green Wave (14-5) from picking up their sixth straight win.

Falling behind 1-0 after doubles play, senior All-American Sumantri got the Huskies on the board quickly in singles, routing 51st-ranked Jenny Kuehn without dropping a game, 6-0, 6-0. It was the 14th win of the year over a ranked opponent for Sumantri.

However, the next Husky points would come after the Green Wave had already clinched, as Tulane pulled out three close first sets in singles and then cruised in their second sets. Dorottya Magas won Tulane's first singles match, 6-4, 6-1 over Allison Rainey at No. 6 singles. Maria Ivanov then beat junior Dinka Hadzic, 6-4, 6-1 at second singles. Tulane then clinched the win at No. 4 singles, where Darya Ivanov finished off Saskia Nauenberg, 6-4, 6-3, after leading 5-0 in the second set.

The Huskies would win the final two singles matches at third and fifth singles. Senior Ahn returned to singles play after battling injuries in recent weeks and took out 96th-ranked Julie Smekodub, 6-4, 7-6 (2). Simpson, a freshman, then scored one of her biggest wins to date, upsetting 67th-ranked Nancy Kockott, 7-6 (5), 6-3, in the fifth singles spot. Washington defeated each of Tulane's three ranked singles players, but their unranked women picked up the slack.

The Green Wave have been strong in doubles all season and showed why today, taking the second and third doubles matches by 8-3 counts to win the doubles point. Sumantri and Hadzic salvaged a win for the Huskies at No. 1 doubles, upending the 37th-ranked Ivanov sister duo, 9-8 (6).

The Huskies return to Pac-10 conference play next weekend with a pair of road matches against the Arizona schools. First up will be a showdown with the Arizona Wildcats on Friday, April 8, at 1:30 p.m. in Tucson.
