Bears Win Seventh Straight Copley Cup

Mission Bay, CA - In one of the closest races of the regatta, the Golden Bears put together a very fast race to win their seventh straight Copley Cup. The varsity eight boat got out to a fast start, building a small lead after the first 500 meters. Over the next 1000 meters the Bears found their rhythm and began to build on their lead. But in the last 500 meters Stanford, Northeastern and Navy made strong pushes towards the finish, posting faster splits than Cal. But the Bears were able to hold onto a one second lead as they crossed the finish line.
In the JV grand final, the Bears were took a commanding lead from the start, leading by five seconds after the first 500 meters. Northeastern stayed within five seconds throughout the rest of the race, but was incapable of taking the lead away from California.
Cal's freshmen eight dominated its race, beating the second place California B by 23 seconds and Orange Coast College by 24 seconds. The Bears had a very fast first 500 meters, building a quick six second lead on Stanford. Over the next 1500 meters Cal continued to build on its lead, finally crossing the finish in open water victory.
