No. 26 Cal Finishes Fifth at PING/ASU Invitational

TEMPE, Ariz. - No. 26 California finished in fifth place with a score of 894 Sunday at the PING/ASU Invitational at Karsten Golf Course on the campus of Arizona State. The Golden Bears carded a score of 301 in the final round.

No. 7 Arizona State and No. 2 UCLA each concluded the 17-team tournament with a 54-hole score of six-over 870, but the Sun Devils claimed the title by virture of the fifth score tie breaker (73 vs. 80). No. 5 Pepperdine took third at 888, and No. 19 Arizona was fifth at 891. No. 8 Washington placed sixth at 895.

ASU freshman Louise Stahle, the No. 1 player in the country, grabbed first in the individual race at seven-under 209, while UCLA's Amie Cochran was second (212) and her teammate, Susie Matthews, was third at 213.

Junior Sophia Sheridan led Cal for the first time this year by placing eighth at 219. Sheridan carded a 74 today propelled by three birdies on the back nine to produce her best finish of the season. Cal junior Sofie Andersson tied for 20th at 224 and led the Bears with a round of 73 today. Andersson's performance included an eagle on the par 5, 14th hole.

Cal senior Claire Dury, who was playing as an individual, also tied for 20th following a final round of 76. Sophomore Mika Takayama tied for 28th (225) after firing a third-round score of 76. Freshman Enu Chung accounted for the Bears' other counting score (78) today and finished in a tie for 62nd (233). Freshman Jen Sanders tied for 68th (235).

Cal will take the next two weeks off from competition before serving as host of the Pac-10 Championships April 18-20 at Ruby Hill Golf Club in Pleasanton, Calif.
