Oregon State Blanks Huskies

CORVALLIS, Ore.-- The 17th-ranked Washington softball team (17-11, 1-2 Pac-10) was shutout by 15th-ranked Oregon State (24-6, 3-0 Pac-10) this afternoon at the OSU Softball Complex. The Beavers out-hit the Huskies 9-4 and took advantage of three UW errors.
The Huskies had runners in scoring position in each of the first three innings but could not plate a run.
Oregon State scored two runs in the first inning on one hit and two errors. Adrienne Alo led off the inning with a walk and the next two batters each reached base via infield errors to load the bases. Vanessa Iapala then doubled to right centerfield to score two runs and give OSU the 2-0 lead.
The Beavers scored three more runs in the third inning on four hits and an error. Iapala and Brianne McGown led off with back-to-back singles to the outfield. Senior Ashley Boek struck out the next batter but walked Lisa Allen to load the bases. Sherina Galvan then drove in two runs with a single up the middle. The Huskies cut the throw from centerfield and attempted to pick Allen at second base after she made a wide turn but the throw went into the outfield, allowing Allen and Galvan to advance to second and third bases. Cambria then singled up the middle to score Allen and give OSU the 5-0 lead.
Oregon State pulled away in the fourth inning, scoring four runs on three hits, two hit batsmen and two walks. Mia Longwell drew a lead-off walk and Iapala took a pitch off the arm to trigger a Washington pitching change. Freshman Caitlin Noble came in to relieve Boek and walked McGowan to load the bases. Kelly Peterson then hit a single off the left field wall to score two runs. Miranda drove in two more with a single to left to take the 9-0 lead.
Washington loaded the bases in bottom half of the fifth with singles by Jacki Hansen and Ashley Charters and Kristen Rivera was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. McGowan sealed the OSU victory with a fly out and strikeout. The game was called after the fifth inning due to the mercy rule.
McGowan (21-2) earned the win as she held Washington to four hits and struck out six.
Boek (11-7) took the loss as she gave up seven runs on six hits in three innings. Noble pitched one inning of relief, giving up two runs on three hits.
The Huskies have five games on tap next week, including a double header vs. Simon Fraser n Seattle on Tuesday at 3 pm. UW will return to Pac-10 action Friday at California and will face Stanford on Saturday and Sunday.
