Rocky Hinds Throws 2 TDs, Mario Danelo Hits 2 Field Goals In USC Intrasquad Scrimmage
April 3, 2005
Sophomore quarterback Rocky Hinds threw a pair of touchdown passes and soph placekicker Mario Danelo nailed a pair of field goals to highlight the first intrasquad spring practice scrimmage for the two-time defending national champion USC football team.
Hinds completed 14-of-17 passes for 159 yards, while fellow soph John David Booty was 16-of-21 for 132 yards with an interception. McFoy caught 5 passes for 46 yards, while sophomore wide receiver Dwayne Jarrett also had 5 catches for 42 yards and Buchanon added 3 grabs for 68 yards.
Sophomore tailback Chauncey Washington scored on a 5-yard run on the scrimmage's first drive. The only other score came on a 25-yard field goal by redshirt freshman walk-on placekicker Phil Mellinger.
On defense, senior safety Scott Ware had 6 tackles and blocked a punt, while sophomore cornerback Terrell Thomas had 5 tackles and blocked a field goal try. Those with 4 tackles included junior linebacker Oscar Lua, soph safety Josh Pinkard, sophomore linebacker Thomas Williams and junior defensive tackle Travis Tofi.
'Our offense came out popping and it took the defense a while to get started, but once it did, we played real good defense,' said fifth-year USC head coach Pete Carroll of the 82-play scrimmage. 'Offensively, it was a day to move the ball around to a lot of players. Both quarterbacks did some good things.'
The Trojans, who conclude spring practice on April 16, will hold a public scrimmage in the Coliseum on April 10 at 11 a.m. Tickets are available by calling the USC Ticket Office at 213-740-4672.
USC opens its 2005 season at Hawaii on Sept. 3.
