Stanford Softball Defeats Arizona State 2-1 In Tempe

Tempe, Ariz. - The Stanford softball team won their first Pac-10 match up of the season with a 2-1 victory over Arizona State this evening in Tempe, Arizona. The Cardinal improve to 25-6 on the season, 1-1 in league play while the Sun Devils drop to 25-9, 0-2 in the Pac-10.

Stanford got on the board in the top of the second inning when Meghan Sickler hit a solo shot to centerfield.

Arizona State tied it up in the bottom of the third after an error by the second baseman allowed Ashley Werschky to score.

The Cardinal struck again in the top of the fifth inning when Catalina Morris led off with an infield single. With one out, Michelle Smith singled to put runners on first and second. Leah Nelson then hit a single to centerfield. The flare was mishandled by the centerfield, allowing Morris to score the go ahead run.

Freshman hurler Becky McCullough (8-1) picked up the win in the circle for Stanford, scattering four hits and one unearned run over seven innings of work. Desiree Serrano (10-3) took the loss for ASU, allowing two runs on four hits over 4.1 innings.

Lauren Lappin and Michelle Smith each collected two hits for the Cardinal while Catalina Morris and Meghan Sickler scored Stanford's runs.

The Cardinal and Sun Devils meet tomorrow at 1 p.m. to close out weekend play.
