Bruins Have Strong Performance At San Diego Crew Classic

April 3, 2005 -- The No. 19 UCLA Women's Rowing team completed the final day of the 32nd Annual San Diego Crew Classic, finishing 4th in the Jessop Whittier Cup, 6th in the Women's JV Grand Final, 2nd in the Women's Collegiate Novice Grand Final, and 7th overall in the Women's Open competition.
The varsity eight advanced to the grand final of the Jessop Whittier Cup after placing second in their preliminary heat with a time of 6:54.42 on Saturday, April 2nd. The Bruins defeated Tennessee, Texas and Purdue in the heat, falling only to Stanford. On Sunday, the Bruins defeated Washington State and Tennessee in the grand final with a time of 6:38.87, falling to Pac-10 Competitors California, Stanford and USC. California captured the Cup in 6:26.43.
The second varsity eight competed in the grand final for the Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Memorial Trophy, finishing in sixth place with a time of 7:01.64. California took the event with a time of 6:51.3. USC, Stanford, Texas and Washington State also competed in the final. The Bruins reached the grand final by placing first in their preliminary heat on Saturday April 2, with a time of 7:02.1.
The Bruin's novice eight had a strong performance in the grand final of the Sea World San Diego Trophy, finishing in 2nd place with a time of 7:11.53. The novice eight defeated Oregon State, Washington State, San Diego State, and Texas in the race. The Bruins came behind California, which captured the trophy with a time of 7:06.5. In the preliminaries on April 2nd, the Bruins captured their heat in a time of 7:02.1, which advanced them to the grand final.
The third varsity eight won the Women's Open Petite Final in a time of 7:28.4, earning seventh place overall for the Women's Open. California took the grand final with a time of 7:04.1. The Bruins finished 3rd in their preliminary heat on Saturday April 2nd, with a time of 7:12.22.

Coming Up- The Bruins return to action next weekend, April 9th and 10th, to compete in the Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic, held at Stanford's home course at Redwood Shores, in Redwood City, CA. This event promises to be largest rowing regatta of its kind on the West Coast.
