Kasser Leads Huskies Past USC, 7-3

SEATTLE - The Washington baseball team salvaged a split in its Pac-10 series withUSC, beating the Trojans, 7-3, Monday at Husky Ballpark in a makeup of Sunday'srained out game.
The Huskies improved to 18-12 on the season and 2-4 in the Pac-10 while USC fell to17-9 and 3-3 in the conference.
Husky starter Matt Kasser (3-2) threw seven solid innings for the victory. The juniorfrom Issaquah allowed three runs on six hits while walking five and striking out five.Senior Josh Conover threw the final two innings to earn his fourth save of the year.
USC freshman starter Anthony Encinas (0-1) lasted only one inning in his first collegestart as the UW scored three in the opening frame. With Taylor Johnson andBrent Lillibridge aboard, Zach Clem hit a single to drive in the first run. After Lillibridgescored one wild pitch, catcher Matt Lane made it 3-0, driving home Clem with a singleup the middle.
The Huskies' offense got rolling again in the third. After Lillibridge led off with a double,he scored on a single from Kyle Larsen. After an out, Lane walked and Curt Rindalsingled to drive in Larsen, giving the UW a 5-0 lead.
USC broke onto the scoreboard in the fourth. Two singles and a walk loaded the baseswith no outs, but the Trojans could only score one run when Billy Hart grounded into adouble play.
Down 5-1, the Trojans rallied with two outs and no one on in the seventh. After DaleLegaspi and Zack Kalter singled to put runners at the corners, USC shortstop BlakeSharpe doubled to right-center, scoring two to cut the UW lead to 5-3.
The UW added two more runs in the eighth when freshman center fielderMichael Burgher walked, stole second and scored on a single from Johnson. AfterJohnson advanced to second on a wild pitch, he scored on an error from first basemanMatt Cusick.
Clem led the Husky hitters, going 3-for-4 with a double, a run and an RBI.
The Huskies close out their seven-game homestand Tuesday night when Portland comesto Husky Ballpark for a 6:30 p.m. game. This weekend, the UW travels to UC Riversidefor three non-conference games.
