Seven Huskies Named To Pac-10 All-Academic Honorable Mention Team

WALNUT CREEK, CALIF. --Seven Huskies were named to the 2005 Pac-10 Women's Basketball All-Academic honorable mention team, conference commissioner Tom Hansen announced last week. Junior Kayla Burt, junior Nicole Castro, sophomore Cameo Hicks, sophomore Maggie O'Hara, junior Kristen O'Neill, sophomore Erica Schelly and sophomore Breanne Watson earned the recognition.
To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 grade-point average and be either a starter or significant contributor.
Burt and Castro are the only repeat Pac-10 All-Academic honorees. Burt was named to the honorable mention team in 2002-03, while Castro was named to the honorable mention team in 2003-04.
Burt, who finished as the Huskies leading scorer with 9.6 points per game, has a 3.06 grade point average and is majoring in communication. Burt started 16 of the 29 games she played, and averaged 2.9 assists and 1.5 steals. Castro, and English major, has a 3.39 GPA and played in 24 of the Huskies' 30 games this past season.
Hicks, a business major, has a 3.25 GPA and was also named to the All-Pac-10 honorable mention team. Hicks averaged 9.5 points and 4.6 rebounds while shooting a team-high 42.4 percent from the field. She started 25 of 30 games played. O'Hara, who started eight of 30 games played, has a 3.48 GPA and is majoring in biology. O'Hara averaged 3.5 points and 3.2 rebounds last season.
O'Neill, a communication major, has a 3.22 grade point average. Sharing the team captain duties with Burt, O'Neill was the only Husky to start all 30 games last season. She averaged 9.5 points and 3.5 rebounds, and made a team-high 46 three-pointers. Schelly, an English major, has a 3.61 GPA and played in 23 games for the Huskies, shooting 87.5 percent from the free-throw line.
The Huskies' final honoree, Watson, has a 3.37 grade point average and is majoring in communication. Watson started seven of 30 games played, averaging 8.2 points and 4.1 rebounds.
