April 5, 2005

LOMPOC, Calif.- - Coming off a tough 36-hole day on Monday, the Oregon State men's golf team came out Tuesday and fired a 7-over 295 to finish tied for 13th in the Bite/Pacific Coast Intercollegiate at the par-72 La Purisima Golf Course. The Beavers posted a three-round total of 907.

'We really dug ourselves a big hole after the first day,' said OSU Coach Brian Watts.

'That made it tough to climb up the leaderboard today.'

Leading the Beavers was sophomore Mitch Gillis, who placed 13th with a 5-over 221, his best finish since the Northwest Collegiate Classic in September. Gillis was tied for fourth after the first two rounds and carded a 3-over 75 in Tuesday's final round.

'Mitch had a good tournament,' added Watts. 'He really had a solid performance.'

Also finishing in the top 35 was senior Cameron MacKenzie, who fired an even-par 72 Tuesday to conclude the tournament in a tie for 32nd at 227.

UC-Davis repeated as tournament champions, cruising to an eight-stroke victory over second-place Washington State with a team total of 879.

Louie Bishop led the Aggies and the entire field as he took home individual medalist honors after finishing with a 1-over 217, including a final-round 3-under 69. There was a four-way tie for second place at 218, including last year's champion, Travis Bertoni of Cal Poly.

Senior Brad Simpson posted a 2-over 74 in his final round and finished tied for 57th with a 230.

Freshman Vincent Johnson and junior Tim Sundseth each tied for 66th with three-round totals of 232.

OSU will play next in the U.S. Intercollegiate, Apr. 16-17 at the Stanford Golf Course in what will be the final tournament before the Pac-10 Championships.

Watts is looking forward to a break from play to regroup and prepare for the upcoming Pac-10s:

'We have a little over a week before we leave for Stanford. All the Pac-10 schools will be represented there, so hopefully we can prepare ourselves for that and get a good idea of what we'll be facing at the Pac-10s.'
