Stanford's Lowrie, Arizona's Guyette Named Pac-10 Baseball Player/Pitcher of the Week

April 5, 2005

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - STANFORD junior infielder Jed Lowrie and ARIZONA junior right-handed pitcher Kevin Guyette have been named Pac-10 Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week for the week of March 29-April 4, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Lowrie, from Salem, Ore., got untracked to lead Stanford to a three-game sweep in its Pac-10 opening series at Washington State last Friday-Sunday. The junior hit .500 (5-of-10) with a double, two homers, eight RBI, seven runs scored, three walks, three sacrifice flies, and a 1.200 slugging percentage against the Cougars. Lowrie highlighted his week with the third two-homer game of his career in an 11-4 win over the Cougars on Apr. 2. In addition, he fielded all 20 of his defensive chances successfully and took part in all five of Stanford's double plays. For the season, Lowrie is hitting .337 with 10 homers and 38 RBI, while adding a .714 slugging percentage. He has made just one error in 115 defensive chances for a .991 fielding percentage.

Guyette, from Phoenix, Ariz., tossed a complete game one-hitter in an 11-0 shutout win over UCLA in Los Angeles on Apr. 2. The right-hander needed just 100 pitches to finish off the Bruins as he struck out 11 and walked two on the night. A second-inning single by UCLA's Tommy Lansdon was the lone hit for the Bruins, as Guyette retired the final 11 batters he faced in the game and did not allow a runner past first after the second inning. The one-hitter was the first complete game victory for Guyette in three tries at Arizona and marked the first complete game shutout for an Arizona pitcher since Sean Rierson blanked UC Irvine 6-0 on Feb. 15, 2003. The Wildcats took all three games in the series with UCLA, their first conference road sweep since 1999.

The Player of the Week honor is the first for Lowrie, while it is the 58th such honor for Stanford. The Pitcher of the Week honor is the first for Guyette and the 32nd selection all-time for Arizona.
