Vanessa Iapala Named Pac-10 Player Of The Week And Brianne McGowan Earns Pitcher Of The Week Honors
April 5, 2005
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State junior first baseman Vanessa Iapala has been named the Pacific-10 Conference Softball Player of the Week, and Oregon State sophomore Brianne McGowan has been named Pitcher of the Week for Mar. 29-Apr. 4, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced on Tuesday.
Iapala, from San Diego, Calif., hit .538 going 7-for-13 at the plate in OSU's five victories last week (a double-header sweep of Portland State, the Pac-10 opener against No. 7, and a pair of games against No. 17 Washington). On the week, Iapala hit three doubles, knocked in four RBI, scored six runs and had a .769 slugging percentage. She leads the Beavers with nine doubles on the season and her career total of 36 ranks in a tie for third place on the OSU all-time list. Iapala ranks second on the team with a .369 batting average and leads the squad with a .571 (4-for-7) clip in Pac-10 games.
McGowan, from Reno, Nev., led the Beavers to a perfect 5-0 record last week, including a 3-0 start in Pac-10 action. She has won 17 consecutive outings and boasted a 0.88 ERA with 39 strikeouts in OSU's five wins last week. McGowan amassed four complete game wins in that stretch and became just the fourth player in school history to earn 20 wins in a single season when she knocked off No. 17 Washington, 7-3, on Apr. 2. She boasts a current record of 21-2 and her 21 victories rank tied for sixth place in the Oregon State single-season record book. Offensively, McGowan matched the OSU school record with a pair of home runs against Washington and tied her career-high with four RBI. She led the Beavers to a 2-1 8-inning victory over No. 7 UCLA on Apr. 1, marking just the seventh time that OSU has knocked off the Bruins in the 75-game series history.
Oregon State has won a school record 18 consecutive games, dating back to Feb. 25. The Beavers are the only conference team that is undefeated after the first weekend of play.
This is the second weekly honor for both Iapala and McGowan. The awards are the 24th and 25th all-time honors for the Beavers.
Oregon State has swept the Pac-10 Player and Pitcher of the Week honors on just two other occasions.
The Beavers host University of Oregon on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
