CAL TEES OFF AT ASU THUNDERBIRD INVITATIONAL: California, the defending 2004 NCAA champion, travels to the ASU Thunderbird Invitational Friday-Saturday, April 8-9 at the par 72, 7,037-yard Karsten Golf Course on the campus of Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz. Thirty six holes will be played Friday, followed by a final round on Saturday. The Golden Bears have been paced by freshman Michael Jensen, who has been Cal's top finisher in the last two tournaments, including tying for eighth at The Western Intercollegiate (played at the Pasatiempo Golf Course) with a two-round score of 144 Mar. 28-29. The Bears also feature returning All-American Jeff Hood, Cal's lone returner from the 2004 NCAA championship squad.
TOURNAMENT HISTORY: The ASU Thunderbird Invitational has been won by Arizona State five of the past six years and the Sun Devils have won the tournament 12 of the past 16 years. Last season, ASU shot a tournament record 43-under 821, while the Sun Devils' Alejandro Canizares won medalist honors with a 16-under 200. Last year, Cal placed ninth out of 16 teams at the ASU Invitational with a six-under 858. Jesse Ruda was the Bears' top finisher, tying for 18th with a five-under 211.
A LOOK AT THE FIELD: This year's 15-team field features five schools ranked in the GCAA/Bridgestone Division I Coaches Poll Top 25. The complete field includes: No. 5 UNLV, No. 7 Arizona State (two teams), No. 9 BYU, No. 13 UCLA, No. 23 Arizona, California, Oregon, Colorado State, Hawaii, Kansas State, Penn State, Pepperdine, Stanford and Texas Tech.

THE WESTERN INTERCOLLEGIATE RECAP: Cal, led by true freshman Michael Jensen, finished in a tie for 10th place at the 59th annual Western Intercollegiate, played at the Pasatiempo Golf Course in Santa Cruz Mar. 28-29. The Bears shot a 290 after round one, trailing only first place Cal Poly (283) and UCLA (289), but fell back with a 308 in the second round for a combined 598. Jensen tied for eighth place in the individual standings after shooting an even par 70 in the first round, and a 74 in the second round for a four-over 144. Jensen's 70 in the first round trailed only UCLA's Daniel Im and Cal Poly's J.J. Scurich, who shot two-under 68s. Junior Fredrik Svanberg shot the second-best two rounds for the Bears with a 149 (72-77, +9), and tied for 28th. Senior Jeff Hood was next on the Cal scoring list with a 151 (75-76, +11), tied for 43rd. Redshirt freshman Jeff Vetterick tied for 61st with a 154 (73-81, +14), and sophomore Brandon Beck tied for 78th with a 158 (77-81, +18).
JENSEN AND HOOD LEAD BEARS: Michael Jensen has had Cal's top finish in the last two tournaments this season, tying for eighth at The Western Intercollegiate and finishing 24th at the Hall of Fame Classic at the Red Stone Golf Club with a three-round 220 (77-69-74, + 4). Jensen is second on the team with a 73.8 average in 22 rounds. The Bears are led by senior captain and returning All-American Jeff Hood with a 73.0 average in 23 rounds. Hood finished tied for 10th at both the PING/Arizona Intercollegiate and the Ashworth Invitational this spring. He also had an eagle on the par-4, 408-yard second hole at Ashworth Invitational, helping Cal to a fifth-place finish - the Bears' best team finish of the spring season. Freshman Kyle Dowden was 15th at the Ashworth Invitational with a 216 (75-72-69), matching Hood with a final round 69. Dowden showed his potential during the fall season when he tied for fifth at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational with a 211 (68-72-71, -2).
