No. 11 Bruins Defeat No. 20 Golden Bears, 5-2
April 8, 2005
LOS ANGELES - UCLA's Daniela Bercek picked up her biggest victory of the season Friday, helping the No. 11-ranked UCLA women's tennis team to a 5-2 win over No. 20 Cal at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. More importantly, the Bruins (13-4; 6-1 Pac-10) are in position to earn a share of the conference title tomorrow with a victory over top-ranked and undefeated Stanford. Cal's record falls to 12-6 overall and 2-3 in the Pac-10 with the loss.
Bercek, who is ranked 25th nationally, defeated fourth-ranked Suzi Babos, 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 1 singles position. The victory avenges a straight-set loss to Babos back on Feb. 26 in Berkeley. Bercek also snaps a five-match losing streak against top-10 opponents this year.
In addition to Bercek, three other Bruin players scored straight-set singles victories on the afternoon. Alex McGoodwin was the first to finish her match, defeating Monica Wiesener, 6-4, 6-0 at court No. 3. Sarah Gregg lost just two games en route to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Marion Ravelojaona at the No. 4 spot. Freshman Riza Zalameda clinched the win for UCLA at court No. 2, posting a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Stephanie Kusano.
Cal's two points on the day came at the bottom two singles positions, as Jessica Shu defeated Bruin freshman Tracy Lin, 6-4, 6-4 at court No. 5, and Cristina Visico knocked off Laura Gordon, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 at court No. 6.
Prior to singles play, the Bruins won the doubles point with victories on court Nos. 1 and 2. In the only doubles match of the day featuring two ranked teams, UCLA's second-ranked duo of Bercek and Zalameda defeated 49th-ranked Babos/Kusano, 8-5.
UCLA's match with Stanford on Saturday is scheduled to begin at Noon.
